Volunteer Training Fact Sheet

This workshop will train you to teach literacy skills to an adult learner.

       This is a 15-hour workshop:

  1. Classroom Observation 1
    On-line training - Principles of Adult Learning
    Session 1: Teaching ESL techniques

    Classroom Observation 2
    On-line Training - Culture and English Language learners
    Session 2: Reading, Writing and Lesson Planning

    On-line training - Working with English language learners in literacy classes
    Session 3: Methods, Curricula, and Resources
     
  2. Materials: our core curricula are the Laubach Way to English. You will also be introduced to supplemental materials that may be appropriate for your student.
     
  3. Requirements:
    - You must attend all sessions for certification.
    - We ask that you commit 6 months to teaching, usually two 90 minute lessons per week, unless other arrangements are made.
     
  4. Workshop Format: Lecture, demonstrations, video, discussion, supervised practice, homework, and one-on-one tutoring experience.
     
  5. Restrooms: Two in Room 105 and two upstairs in Room 203.
     
  6. Name Tags: Please leave in the box at the end of each session.
     
  7. 30-second stretch breaks occur between presentations to help you stay alert.
     
  8. Refreshments: Coffee/tea and snacks are available before the workshop and during the 15-minute break halfway through each session.
     
  9. During the 15-minute break in each session, you may smoke outside the building and visit with each other or with the trainers.
     
  10. Books and other materials may be purchased at the conclusion of the workshop.
     
  11. ALP provides student books at cost. When you contact your student, please inform them that they will be asked to purchase their books. The books range in price from $7.00 - 32.00.
     
  12. Many other books and materials may be borrowed through our lending library. The front desk checks out and keeps a log of those books.
     
  13. Lori Pickett matches the students and tutors on the basis of her interview and intake examination of the student, and on your Tutor Data Sheet. If you have any problems with your student, please contact her (337-1981).
     
  14. You will be assigned your student during the second session of the workshop. Please contact your student as soon as possible and make arrangements for your first meeting. If you have difficulty contacting your student, please talk to Lori.
     
  15. The staff at ALP is committed to making your tutoring experience successful and enjoyable for both you and your student. Our hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Give us a call or drop by the office any time!
