Purpose
To help adults learn to read, write and/or speak English in a small class setting or one-on-one tutor relationship.

Training
ALP conducts several Teacher Training workshops throughout the year. The workshops include three 3-hour sessions and volunteers need to attend every session to become certified. ALP offers in-services on topics of interest to teachers several times a year.

Place
Teaching occurs in classrooms located at the ALP Rudakof site. Classrooms could possibly be at libraries, community rooms or churches. Tutoring can be at locations that are mutually acceptable to both the tutor and student. These locations could be the student's or tutor's home, ALP, libraries, community rooms or churches.

Hours
Classes meet two times a week for 90 minutes each session. ALP offers classes on a quarterly basis, each quarter is 10 weeks.

Duration
A two-class commitment is required of volunteer teacher/tutor. You may fulfill this commitment by teaching two classes in one quarter or one class in two separate quarters over the course of a year. This is a significant amount of your time, and we ask that you consider it carefully before volunteering. If you tutor one-on-one we ask for a minimum six month commitment.

Qualifications
Volunteer teachers/tutors must know how to read, write and speak the English language, and be genuinely interested in helping another adult improve his/her literacy skills.

Instruction
ALP uses Laubach materials to provide a structured method for teaching adults basic reading, writing and/or speaking skills. Teachers may also use other available curricula. Tutors learn how to develop lessons to meet the specific needs of their students.
