Frequently Asked Questions

What if...

I can't get in touch with my student?
Try at least three different times during the day. If you are still unsuccessful call Gladys at 337 - 1981.

My student misses several classes without contacting me?
Call Lori. If she cannot contact the student, or if the student does not want classes anymore she will match you with a new student from the waiting list.

My student and I don't get along?
Don't worry ! Call Lori and she will find you a new student and the student a different tutor. Don't feel guilty! Personality conflicts are not unusual.

I don't feel comfortable going to the student's home?
Suggest a neutral meeting place near your student's home - for example a library or coffee shop. If you want some specific ideas call Lori.

I want to meet my student socially?
No problem ! If you feel comfortable showing your student around Anchorage or meeting for lunch go for it! Be aware however that cultural differences do exist and that you and your student may have different expectations when it comes to friendship.

If you prefer to maintain a strictly professional teacher-student relationship that's OK too - just do what makes you feel comfortable.

I go on vacation ?
Have fun, let your student know how long you will be gone, and resume lessons when you return. You can leave homework for the student to work on while you are away, but often both tutor and student benefit from a break.

I move ?
Across town: Call Lori and give her your new address and telephone number.

If continuing with your current student is difficult (because of transportation or travel time) call Lori to work something out.

Out of State: Call Lori so she can remove you from the mailing list, find your student a new tutor, and wish you Bon Voyage!

I can't tutor anymore ?
Don't be embarrassed! Call Lori so she can remove you from the mailing list and find your student a new tutor. It is important for us to know when tutoring sessions end so we can keep our records up to date - So PLEASE give us a call if things don't work out.

The material is too easy for my student?
To ensure that the student has a good foundation don't skip anything. If the material seems easy go through it quickly then move on to something more difficult. You can also supplement the lessons with material from ALP's library. Call Gladys or another trainer for suggestions.

My student doesn't seem to be making progress?
Don't get discouraged! Students often progress at different speeds. If you are worried call Lori or another trainer - they are always happy to give suggestions!

I want to use supplementary materials?

Great! Individualizing your lessons is always beneficial. Use focused listening, information grids and other techniques learned in the workshop to jazz up your lessons. There are also a lot of great materials in the ALP lending library. For suggestions call Lori any time!

My student wants citizenship instruction too?
ALP usually has a citizenship class, call for times. ALP also has study materials.

My student's entire family wants to learn English?
You are NOT obligated to work with more than one student. IF you want, feel free to work with other family members. IF you do not want to work with more than one student refer family members to ALP so Lori can match them with another tutor.

ALL family members must have an intake assessment before beginning lessons.

My student quits?
Please contact Lori to let her know that the tutoring sessions have stopped. If you are still interested in tutoring, Lori will assign you a new student from the wait list.

I have ANY other questions?
