In the United States, nearly half of the adult population, or 93 million adults according the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, has very poor or marginal literacy skills. Fourteen percent of adults in the United States read at or below the fifth-grade level.

The best indicator of a child's success in school is the educational attainment of his/her parents. Research has shown that when you invest $1 dollar in teaching an adult to read $33 dollars are returned to your community. Adults who can read and write:

  • earn more wages to support their families,
  • teach their children good reading habits,
  • pay more taxes, and
  • are more likely to contribute to their communities.

Volunteer to teach a class and give the power of literacy. Together we can change our community and world by giving people a hand up. Please complete this interest form for more information.

Our biggest source of new Volunteer Teachers is you! Word of mouth from our supporters including current and past volunteers, board members, friends, donors, and staff brings us the majority of our new recruits. Please mention the great opportunity to give the gift of English and reading whenever you can. We love to show off our programs and will give a tour to anyone interested in learning more about us.

Advocacy is an important part of shaping and changing the world. Taking action does not have to be hard or take a lot of time, but it can be very powerful. Make your voice heard and use it to speak for someone that may not be able to speak for themselves. The best way to insure adults will continue to have access to low-cost literacy classes is if we as a community continue to let the decision makers know it is a priority.

Put what you care passionately about into writing. It makes a difference!

Ways to Advocate:

  • Write a letter - to a decision maker, the newspaper, a friend or family member.
  • Help someone you know receive literacy services so that they can tell their story.
  • Send an email to your political representatives.
  • Invite an ALP representative to talk to a group you belong to.
  • Host a dinner at your home and share with your friends and family why supporting adult literacy is a passion of yours and matters to our community.

Please contact us if you need ideas or information.
